EZ Tips For Energy Savings

Measure

  • Look at your utility bills.
  • Request the last 12 months usage from utility providers.
  • Track your gas or diesel usage.
  • Benchmark: Go to the EnergyStar Yardstick or the RechargeColorado website.
  • Set goals to reduce energy usage. 

Turn Off and Unplug:

  •  Turn off lights when they are not needed.
  •  Compact fluorescent lamps cost 75% less to operate than incandescent lamps.
  •  Reduce lighting when there is adequate natural light.
  •  Unplug electronics that draw “phantom loads” or use a power strip.
  • Check Out a "Kill A Watt" meter at the Grand County Library to determine how much electricity various appliances use.       

Around Town:

  • Turn off your car when you run in to get your mail, snacks, etc.
  •  Walk if the errand is less than ¼ of a mile away.
  •  Turn off the TV and Game Console 1x a week and take an after dinner family walk.

Around the House:

  • Wash laundry in cold or warm water.
  • Make a commitment to hang dry 1 of every 3 loads of laundry.
  •  Select the air dry cycle on the dishwasher.
  •  Use the microwave rather than the oven to warm food.
  •  Use lids on pots.
  •  Shower for five minutes or less.
