EZ Tips For Energy Savings
Measure
- Look at your utility bills.
- Request the last 12 months usage from utility providers.
- Track your gas or diesel usage.
- Benchmark: Go to the EnergyStar Yardstick or the RechargeColorado website.
- Set goals to reduce energy usage.
Turn Off and Unplug:
- Turn off lights when they are not needed.
- Compact fluorescent lamps cost 75% less to operate than incandescent lamps.
- Reduce lighting when there is adequate natural light.
- Unplug electronics that draw “phantom loads” or use a power strip.
- Check Out a "Kill A Watt" meter at the Grand County Library to determine how much electricity various appliances use.
Around Town:
- Turn off your car when you run in to get your mail, snacks, etc.
- Walk if the errand is less than ¼ of a mile away.
- Turn off the TV and Game Console 1x a week and take an after dinner family walk.
Around the House:
- Wash laundry in cold or warm water.
- Make a commitment to hang dry 1 of every 3 loads of laundry.
- Select the air dry cycle on the dishwasher.
- Use the microwave rather than the oven to warm food.
- Use lids on pots.
- Shower for five minutes or less.
