Energy Saving Window Treatments

An average home may lose up to 30% of its heating or cooling energy through its windows.  While your first impulse may be to replace your old windows with higher performing windows, you may find that you simply can’t afford to.
Blinds, shades and window films are an affordable alternative to window replacement.  In general, during the winter you will want to close the coverings at night and open them during the day.  In the summer keep the coverings closed during the day and open your windows at night to cool your home. As you investigate window treatments pay attention to the orientation of your windows.
·         West facing windows are a significant source of heat gain during the summer.  Coverings that are light colored or have a reflective backing will help keep heat out during the day.

·         South facing windows can be a source of heat gain during the winter months. Be sure to open window coverings to capture this heat gain on sunny winter days. Close the coverings when the sun goes down to prevent heat loss.
Installation details are also important in reducing energy use. Coverings that have air gaps on the sides, top or bottom are not effective in reducing convective and conductive heat loss.
Some window treatments may be eligible for tax credits up to $1500 or 30% of the installation cost . When you apply for a tax credit you will need a Manufacturer’s Certification Statement to keep for  your records. Denise Cook of Paradise Designs  reports that  Hunter Douglas offers a Manufacturer’s Certification Statement for certain window treatments.  To review Hunter Douglas FAQ's and other documents that pertain to window coverings see the attached documents below.
However not all window treatments come with a Manufacturer's Certification Statement.  You should consult your tax advisor and be aware of the lack of IRS guidance on tax credits for window treatments.
The tax credit issue aside, window treatments are a practical and affordable method of reducing energy costs if you are willing to open and close them routinely.
